Dave’s Vintage News

This season we had a very dry winter resulting in earlier bud-burst by 7 to 10 days. Fortunately good rains in early summer provided some relief. Mild conditions during flowering provided good fruit set. Early canopy management has eased the disease pressure following the 2 weeks of abnormally wet and humid weather in late January.

Bird pressure has been higher than normal with no Marri flowering. This was most evident in our strawberry and tomato patch at home, so netting the vineyard was brought forward 1 week for the Chardonnay and 2 weeks for the reds. This was completed by mid-January. I suspect vineyards who have delayed netting will face significant disease pressure from the bird peck, high humidity and summer rains. The balance between fruit and foliage is very good with average yields predicted. Current baume readings indicate we are on track to pick early March for the Chardonnay and the Cabernets, Malbec and Shiraz late March/early April. Cyclones or unforseen weather events aside, we look set to have an excellent 2011 vintage! Cheers Dave

New Release 2009 Chardonnay

I know we traditionally have a pretty high standard with our limited release Chardonnay . . . well, I have to say this 2009 vintage has to be my favourite yet.

It’s soft, it’s creamy, it’s got excellent balance and structure . . . beautiful mouthfeel (mmm yum) and we only produced 75 cases . . . it really should be $35 a bottle, but right now it’s only $22.50 when you are buying a case! visit the shop

Wine News & Feedback

Graffin20090226_194.CR2We are pleased to report that the 2007 reds are coming together beautifully, and best appreciated with a meal, giving the wines a bit of time to open up, and warm to a more palatable temperature (compared to our cool cellar!) I had a lovely man call through the week who was blown away by the 2007 Cab Blend, and wondering if he could find some in Perth close by (he was prepared to drive 40 minutes to La Vigna!) I just had to jot down when he said “you can taste the earth in it”. OOHH! I love it!

Some recent comments about the 2005 Reserve:

we are having a MOOMBAKI night; the 07 Chardonnay was great, but the 2005 Reserve was superb . . . it is just drinking beautifully, an outstanding wine

as soon as you let it sit for even 15 minutes or so was wonderful . . . terrific

“I tried this wine over the weekend……it was simply superb

Only 100 bottles of this wine left for sale, so if you were planning on squirreling a few away in your cellar you’d better get a move on.

PS. The Premium RED mixed cases have proved popular with 2 x 05 Reserve and 5 each of the 07 Cab Blend & Shiraz wines [$325] or try our Dinner Party 6 Pack [$180]

New Release 07 Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec

moombaki-bottle-racksReady for something new for the cellar? The Moombaki Cab Blend has earned quite a following over the last few years, and we have worked hard to keep the high benchmark for the wines.

Previous vintages have attracted an array of medals and industry awards. This eagerly anticipated vintage has a lot going on – amazing intensity of flavours, a rich palate, balanced by fine tannins. In style, it has more in comparison with the 2004 vintage (we reckon). Sourced entirely from the MOOMBAKI vineyard, and handpicked by our dedicated mob, the 2007 fruit was pristine. Read tasting notes here.

Now I’m sure most of us don’t need much of an excuse to open a good bottle of red in this weather. When it’s been made thoughtfully, with a balanced ecological footprint, and supports business with integrity, then it must be even easier to part with your money . . . so go ahead! Order here.

Frogs safe in this ecological vineyard!

frogs safe hereYou’ve probably heard that the presence of frogs in an environment is a great indicator of how balanced that environment is.

And it is always a delight to see such an example of getting the ecology of the vineyard right, when you come across a frog, happily hanging out in the vines. This one was snapped by 11 y.o. Oliver, our chief photographer on picking day.

Hand-picked reds, a perfect finish to 2009 vintage.

picking the redsTrying to anticipate the weather gods, and the likelihood of weather forecasts to be accurate indicators of pending weather, can be a stressful task around vintage. Dave spends many hours poring over the weather websites, in an effort to get the grapes off at the best possible time.

It has been a pretty dry year, which has caused the vines a bit of stress (apparently good for flavour profiles as long as the vines don’t start to shut down). So it was with the forecast of an electrical storm, and a big dump of raining coming that we decided it was time to pick.

The baume readings were looking really good (slowly, but surely going up), so plenty of sugar and flavour in the grapes. We put a great team together – mostly friends and family who love a MOOMBAKI drop – and perfect weather ensued for a great day of picking. All up we picked the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec (for that lovely bordeaux style blend) and Shiraz in the one day.

Star of the day had to be our own 14 y.o. Nelson, who hauled the buckets all day and together with James emptied them into the picking bins, equating to handling around 7 1/2 tonnes of fruit!

New Release 2008 Chardonnay

wines-chardonnayWe only produce tiny quantities of this sought after Chardonnay.
All hand-picked from our estate-grown block, this year we’ve even taken it up a notch with the best French oak available – really tight grain, making it a truly well-balanced drop.

Grab a case while you can!

Great Morning for Chardonnay pick!

morning of Chardonnay pickAn unusually warm, and sultry morning awaited us as we prepared at first light for the 2009 vintage Chardonnay pick.

And with warnings of thunderstorms on the way, the timing couldn’t have been better. We got off to a great start, with friends helping out for a few hours, and thankfully (as it was quickly warming up) we were finished in good time for morning tea.

The baked risotto autumn vegie bake and spiced apple cake went down a treat!
