12 Feb After the Bushfires
In light of the recent bushfire tragedies in Victoria, all I can think of is what we can do to help those affected.
It doesn’t feel right to harp on about what great things we are doing, in light of the tragedy many people are facing, which will take years to recover from.
I know a lot of our businesses are suffering due to the current economic downturn (and yes, we do have a mounting pile of bills that we are struggling to pay, and can’t afford a full vintage this year!) but somehow that all pales into insignificance when you have to face what our contemporaries in Victoria have had to face.
And going out into our small community of Denmark (Great Southern WA) on Monday there is a sadness and empathy in the air to think that this could be us; looking around at charred remains of our town; or wondering whose faces we may no longer meet in the street; and it really is too dreadful to contemplate.
Through a friend of ours who relocated to Hurstbridge, Melbourne (only a few kilometres from the devastating fires): Morriss Watson (to whom you may remember we dedicated our 2005 Reserve), we have learnt that 3 families to whom he is a close friend have lost everything: their vineyards, their homes, chalets, art collection, their lives’ work, but thankfully not their lives.
It really does make you think about what is important. We are donating $40 from every case of Shiraz sold over the next 4 weeks and 10% from all our other case sales to the Appeal. Read more.
