2008 Chardonnay

wines-chardonnayTasting Notes | Awards and Reviews

The MOOMBAKI Chardonnay is sourced entirely from estate grown fruit on our Kent River property. The dry grown vines are cane-pruned and carefully managed throughout the growing season, then handpicked fruit is fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak.

Only free-run juice is used in the making of this exemplary wine. The 2008 vintage exhibits a fine balance between fruit flavour, texture, and length.

This elegant wine will continue to improve with careful cellaring over the next 6 years.

Tasting notes from winemaker James Kellie.

Appearance

A brilliant crisp, green straw colour.

Aroma

A vibrant, perfumed nose of citrus blossom and fresh nectarines balanced by spicy French oak and complex, yeast-derived, savoury aromas.

Palate

The use of free-run juice has produced an impressively elegant palate, with a perfect balance between fruit, texture and length. Initial flavours of grapefruit and mandarin lead to a more savoury mid palate that finishes with lingering citrus acidity balanced by toasty French oak.

Cellaring

The use of Screw Cap technology will allow this wine to be cellared, with confidence, for up to 5 years.

Alcohol

13.5%

Ordering

$270 per case (12 bottles – that’s only $22.50 a bottle). Free delivery in Australia.

Awards

The MOOMBAKI Chardonnay is produced in quantities too small to be accepted into most wine shows and the 2008 has JUST been released (April 2009). It does, however, have a great track record of scoring 94 points from James Halliday (2004 & 2005 vintages). Try it for yourself.

Bronze 2008 vintage – Australian Small Winemakers Show 2009, Stanthorpe QLD.

4 1/2 Stars 2007 vintage – Winestate Magazine March 2009. Equal Top in Category.

Reviews

spice magazine summerWe recently had a swanky little write up in Spice Magazine by Jason Boudville for our 2007 Chardonnay. He writes about suitable wines for relaxed outdoor picnics and enjoying the West Coast summer.

For those wanting to dive a little deeper into something more complex – think Baudelaire or outdoor dinner party – MOOMBAKI has crafted this wine with primary characters finely balanced with quality oak. White peach and almond meal flavours, one and a half somersaults from an initial tight lime springboard. Cashew nut and vanillin – testament to the French oak used, is well balanced on the palate and finishes without causing too much of a splash.
