New Release 2009 Chardonnay

I know we traditionally have a pretty high standard with our limited release Chardonnay . . . well, I have to say this 2009 vintage has to be my favourite yet.

It’s soft, it’s creamy, it’s got excellent balance and structure . . . beautiful mouthfeel (mmm yum) and we only produced 75 cases . . . it really should be $35 a bottle, but right now it’s only $22.50 when you are buying a case! visit the shop

and . . . the 2 bottles of 07 Reserve go to . . .

. . . Brett Montgomery! What a fantastic response we’ve had to our re-roof the shed appeal, and in good time for the rainy weather. Thanks so much to everyone who bought a case of wine (or two) . . . it’s great to know our wine is still a firm favourite amongst our mailing list!

MOOMBAKI Re-roof the Shed Appeal for March!

Welcome to the launch of the MOOMBAKI Re-roof the Shed Appeal for March!

Notice the rather unconventional air-conditioning and sky-lights in the shed? Well, you know how some jobs take longer to get to than others? The shed is one of those. We bought the tin to replace the roof 16 years ago, when we bought the property, but soon enough, the tin went to other uses, such as; turning the falling-down carport into a studio/cellar-door, fixing up the outside laundry, and making a new shed for the vineyard nets and tractor. That, of course, meant the old shed just had to wait, and just when we thought we had enough money, some new lot of bills come in. And considering we are bottling 1,000 + bottles of wine in the next few weeks, it’s pretty scary! So what to do? Sell loads of wine of course!

Hence, the MOOMBAKI Re-roof the Shed Appeal for March. And hopefully we’ll sell enough wine to pay for the bottling as well!

So, to twist your arm I wanted to offer you a $20 voucher that you could redeem at check-out (but my system needs upgrading to cope with this, and this costs money too – typical!) So I’ve taken the discount directly off the wine in the online shop for a very short time. So, if you buy a couple of cases you get $40 off!

Mmm, now should we do a prize draw as well? How about a couple of those delicious 2007 Reserve’s? Okay, now you’ve twisted my arm, every case order goes into the draw to win a 2007 Reserve 2-pack (free delivery within Australia).

Chardonnay pick comes off a treat!

And how beautiful are those Chardonnay bunches? We spent yesterday morning harvesting the Chardonnay with a few close friends, and everyone commented on the quality of the fruit – such gorgeous bunches! There wasn’t a lot of it, however, only 1.16 tonne – so we had to get the dog to guard the buckets. Doesn’t she do a great job!

Home-Grown Produce

Well, we’ve taken our ecological ethos a bit further with growing and eating lots of our own home-grown produce. Last night it was own-grown beef (with yummy Screaming Seeds Kashmiri Krush), bbq’d withour own spuds, lebanese eggplants & a gorgeous fresh-picked salad full of greens, cherry tomatoes, red salad onion, snap peas & cucumber (we had a day off from the zucchini, and the baby carrots never make it to the table, thanks to the free-ranging kids).

and then there’s the paella . . .

Well, I got a bit inspired watching one of those cooking shows, and when you live 35k from the nearest shop you sometimes have to be creative. Luckily we had some chorizo, saffron, and risotto rice; a beautiful own made chicken stock in the freezer; some nice summer veggies in the garden; and a couple of gorgeous marron in the dam just waiting for us to make the perfect paella!

what to do with 3 grumpy kids . . .

No Mum, we don’t want to go to the beach, we just want to do nothing today (read: play computer all day). So we forced them in the car and headed to Peaceful Bay, where the Irwin Inlet flows through to the ocean, and they found their happiness again playing in the mud and didn’t want to leave! Oh, for the simple things in life.

Murdoch Uni Visit

Last week, we were proud to host a group of 25 students with their Professor from Murdoch Uni’s School of Sustainability, organised through Denmark’s Centre for Sustainable Living. The main gist of the Moombaki part of the tour was to look at resilient communities and ecological entrepreneurs (who us? I laughed). But when we look back at our history over the last 15 years, we’ve fenced off the river from grazing stock; planted thousands of trees (with a complement of understory plants); rehabilitating the habitat of the local fauna (and we were reminded that we used pigs to dig up and fertilise what was to be the heritage apple orchard); and then put in a vineyard with not much money and lots of hard work, with a vision of being ecologically sustainable!

Well, we did start to feel that we had achieved quite a bit, even though at times it felt like we weren’t getting anywhere (except for a too close relationship with the bank!) We are glad to see though, that this is all coming around, and if you do stick to what you believe in, and do it ethically, and just hang in there, well you might just get success. And then there’s our supportive mailing list customers, buying our wines, and giving us great feedback – this is what makes the small business vineyard-model work! And the wine awards are just a bonus!

A Big Thankyou!

Christmas CardDave and I would like to thank everyone who ordered a case of wine in the last fortnight and entered the draw to win a Special Mixed Case. The lucky numbers came up for Derek S. of Western Australia and we congratulate him on his win. We also have a growing kitty for the Oxfam Save Water/Save Lives Appeal which we will continue to add to until Christmas ($10 donation from every case sold).

And, a BIG Thankyou to everyone who has supported us in the last year, either by buying wine, or telling someone about us, or sharing a bottle. It is always appreciated!
